Ormoc Tragedies

I was eight (8) months pregnant with my youngest child when the flashflood happened. It was a working day and when heavy rain poured I asked permission from our Manager that I will go home ‘coz I was concerned of my 2 children left in our house in Brgy. Cogon with their yayas, but he didn’t give his consent. It was a blessing that our building was a two-storey building and we had to rush to the 2nd floor since the water level reached the 1st floor. We saw appliances, LPG tanks, roof of houses carried by the strong current. At past 3:00 pm, when the water subsided, I looked for my husband who was stranded in Real St. with the panel he was driving. From Real St. we walked to DPWH Office in Punta passing thru the Alegria Bridge. In our way home, we saw dead bodies lying beside the road. When we reached Punta I was tired because my shoes were full of mud and we were hungry since we had not eaten. We were able to ride a bus of JD Liner in going to Cogon. In the evening my stomach ached and my husband was concerned if I might deliver my baby. I calmed him down saying it was just stress and over fatigue of our walking.

At 5:00 am we were watching the television set to monitor the super typhoon. Past 5:00 the wind begun to blow until it became stronger and heavy rainfall poured down. When part of our roofing was blown down we looked for a place in our house that we won’t get wet. The garage and roofing of our pig pens were blown losing all the GI sheets. When the strong wind stopped at past 1:00 pm, we realized the damages caused by Typhoon Yolanda. Since we had food in our house left during the birthday of my husband, I called my neighbors to bring food container so that I can give them some lechon paksiw. The salad and cake were also shared among my neighbors, who were frightened and hungry since they had not eaten their breakfast and lunch yet.

It was the 2nd birthday of my grandson Franco and we held his party at the swimming pool in Brgy. San Vicente, just a kilometer from our house. The kids and adults enjoyed swimming. At about 4:00 pm, when we were about to pack up, the earthquake happened. I was about to crawl under the table when I heard the children and adults screaming. I stood up and told them to stay calm and to just embrace their children. My husband who was sitting inside the car held on the steering wheel and he watched the mountains that surrounded the pool ‘coz he was afraid it might gave way. When the earthquake stopped, we packed immediately and headed home.
