Ormoc Tragedies

Ormoc Tragedies

On November 5, 1991, during the Ormoc City Flashflood tragedy, I was 7 years old. I was a Grade 1 student. In my place where I was living, only the typhoon hit my place, I was so very scared that time, as the typhoon was very long until it stopped, and the typhoon was bringing strong rain, that caused flashflood in the city. Since the typhoon cannot stop, we were to go to the evacuation center. The evacuation center in our barangay is the school building of Patag Elementary School. There were so many family evacuees on that school. After the flood, the next day, when my parent went to the city, they said there were so many people who died; the others were on the sea floating. On that time we cannot eat seafood as we can imagine the many people who died that were floating on the sea.

A week before Yolanda hit Leyte, the weather news always reminded the affected areas, they said the typhoon was signal no. 4, but we did not believe it, as typhoons always hit the country which is always signal no. 3. That is why the day before the typhoon, I was not so scared that there was an incoming typhoon, because Leyte especially Ormoc City is not so affected during typhoons. On the day before Yolanda hit Ormoc City, I observed that the environment was so very hot. The sun was very strong, I felt the air was hot also, and that’s why I was very calm the day before the typhoon. On November 7, 2013 afternoon, the rain started to fall. There was very strong rain, and the environment started to cool, on Nov. 7, 2013 at 10:00 in the evening, the weather forecast reminded us of the track of the typhoon, especially the affected areas. President Noynoy Aquino warned the affected areas to prepare for the incoming typhoon. And I transferred to Brgy. Kagawad Raul G. Formentera’s house, we stayed there together with my family. On Nov. 8, 2013, Typhoon Yolanda started to land fall at Leyte, the very strong wind blow in our place, I was very scared that time. When the wind blows, it was so very painful to the ear and my heart because of the impact of the wind, and I saw my house was totally damage, only the flowing left to my house. And almost 100% of the houses in my barangay were totally damaged. And all of my things left. And I learned that we should always prepare especially for the basic needs, and if there is a typhoon warning we must give importance to it because if not it will cause devastated in all sector of our life.

On July 6, 2017, I was at the barangay hall. I was doing my duties, I was making a report that time together with the Barangay Treasurer. On July 6, 2017, around 4:03 in the afternoon, I experienced a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, I was so very scared that time. I felt nervous, I told the Barangay Treasurer that we should get away out of the room, but we cannot pass through the basketball court because there was steel debris as we were constructing a covered court. The Barangay Treasurer felt nervous that time, she did not know what to do, she run through the basketball court and fell going back inside the hall, if without me, I think she could have been injured as the debris were falling. And I said to her, to take cover under the table. I learned that if there is an earthquake, we must be calm to think what we are going to do.
