Ormoc City Division delivered an impressive medal haul in this year’s Eastern Visayas Regional Athletics Association (EVRAA) Meet on February 5-11 at Biliran province by garnering 78 gold, 50 silver, and 68 bronze medals in the overall count, thanks to the all-out support of the city government to the athletes.
Ormoc, which placed 3rd last year with 41 gold, 43 silver, and 52 bronze, rose to 2nd place this year next to Leyte Division, now a five-time overall champion since 2012.
Leyte also dominated in the secondary level with 76 gold, 46 silver, and 35 bronze medals, followed by Ormoc with 34 gold, 31 silver, and 36 bronze medals. In the elementary level, however, Ormoc overtook Leyte Division, placing first with their 44 gold, 19 silver, and 32 bronze medals.
Baybay came next to Ormoc with 39-34-44 in the third place, while Maasin and Tacloban won fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Mayor Richard Gomez, together with the city officials took pride of the victory of the Ormoc athletes. To recall, the city government approved enough funds amounting to P6.8 million to cater the athletes’ needs, and also to procure a set of ‘branded’ sports shoes and uniforms for the athletes for the first time. The officials even attended the opening ceremony of the regional sports tournament at Naval, Biliran to show more support to the Ormoc delegates.
The winners of this year’s EVRAA will represent the region in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa, which does not have a definite venue yet.
