Mayor Gomez helps free a huge loggerhead turtle back to sea

Mayor Richard Gomez helped release a huge sea turtle trapped in a fishnet back to the sea on Thursday morning, January 26, the first thing he did at work when he got back from an official travel.

The sea turtle was identified as a male loggerhead (Caretta caretta). It weighs around 30 to 40 kilos with a carapace length of 63 cm. and width of 66 cm., according to City Fisheries personnel, Irish Belmonte.

Jerry Torres, 31 years old from Brgy. Naungan, one of the city’s “bantay dagat” (fish warden) said that he found the entangled loggerhead in his fishnet at around 4 a.m. when he went fishing somewhere in Brgy. Ipil. He then immediately turned it over to the City Fisheries Division for proper handling, knowing that butchering sea turtles is illegal.

Together with the City fisheries personnel, Mayor Gomez released back the sea turtle to the sea. He also lauded and rewarded the fish warden for turning over the loggerhead, which was indeed an endangered species.
